Come and Enjoy Richburg South Carolina

windmill The Greater Richburg South Carolina area is located in the heart of the Olde English District, one of 11 tourism districts in South Carolina. With a rich history, a short distance to two major metropolitan areas and a number of small cities and towns, the Greater Richburg area offers a wide range of things to do. Whether you are traveling or thinking of relocating, we have an array of interesting places to enjoy.

Located at the Exit 65 and SC Highway 9 interchange of SC I-77, the Greater Richburg community is only an hour away from the metropolitan areas of Columbia, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina. The Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is less than an hour away. We are also centrally located within three hours of the beautiful white sandy beaches of South Carolina and the mountains of North Carolina.

cabin in Landsford Canal State Park The early Richburg settlers in the area were mainly Scots-Irish from Virginia and Pennsylvania who began immigrating to the Upcountry of South Carolina in the 1750s. They settled in what is known as the Piedmont region of the Carolinas.

During the Revolutionary War, both Cornwallis (British) and Sumter (American) crossed over the ford here before and after pivotal battles.

At Rodman, a great deal of the location filming for the Mel Gibson movie The Patriot took place around Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church and the surrounding rural countryside. In Richburg, you can find the Chester District Genealogical Society located in an office adjacent to the Richburg Town Hall.

deer Up until the early 1980's, the area had remained mostly agricultural. Family farms, two lane roads, and a long drive on Highway 21 between Charlotte and Columbia were the norm. But with the arrival of I-77, it wasn't long before the farmlands would begin giving way to new subdivisions and industrial parks, and those two-lane, farm-to-market roads began carrying ever increasing traffic. Tractors and farm equipment were replaced by eighteen wheelers and SUVs.

The residents in the area are proud of their tranquil rural setting and "down home" feel. Being only minutes away from a metropolitan area, we can proudly note that cultural, historical, and recreational opportunities abound, ensuring a rich and varied lifestyle while still retaining the flavor of the "old rural South".

We enjoy an exceptionally low crime rate. Chester County provides well-equipped and staffed police and EMS, while the local fire departments are mostly manned by volunteers.

church The people in our community exhibit a strong character and friendliness that is hard to find. We have numerous churches and denominations, all of which are an integral part of life here in this area. They dwell in the familiar small country church setting that makes everyone feel welcome. Several of our churches can trace their beginnings back to the 18th century, and with their strong foundations, they now serve as spiritual centers within the community. The churches sponsor programs that provide support for the senior citizens, assistance to the needy, and work with the young people.
